One of the finest books on the Caucusus, and a standard in 1869, 1887 and in 1889, where he ascended the mountains of Elbris, kasbek and Tetnuld. The photographic record assembled, was an important part of the work, with much of the photography by Vittorio Sella Even as late as 1896, relatively little was know about this area of the Caucasus, and as Freshfield says in his preface, "I know of no case where a region, hitherto mysterious, has been so suddenly and completely revealed in all its details, as the Central Caucasus has been by Signor Vittorio Sella " Neate F64.
