FREUD, Sigmund. Vorlesungen zur Einfhrung in die Psychoanalyse . Leipzig and Vienna: Hugo Heller, 1916-1917. 8 o (230 x 153 mm). Half-tone plate. 3 parts in 1. Contemporary black half cloth and marbled boards, original printed orange front wrapper and title-page for the third part bound in (a little worn). FIRST EDITION of Introductory Lectures on Psychoanalysis , one of Freud's most read works. PRESENTATION COPY to Oskar Pfister, inscribed by Freud at top of bound-in front wrapper: "Herrn Dr. O. Pfister/herzlich d. Verf./27.IX.16." Oskar Pfister (1873-1956), a Protestant minister in Zurich, "was Freud's good friend and correspondent, and a student of the application of psychoanalysis to education [he was known as the 'analysis-pastor']" (Norman). Pfister has annotated this copy throughout; at the back he has bound in a typed index to the work. This is the only presentation copy from Freud to another analyst that Haskell F. Norman knew of.
