[Full sets are rare outside ornithological libraries, so please contact us if you would like more details of this set.] Originally intended as a four-volume work, this eventually became a set of seven volumes, the first six published by Academic Press, the seventh by Christopher Helm, also of London. This is a fine set of all seven volumes, all first editions, complete and unmarked, laminated colour-illustrated dustjackets of different colours (Vols 1-III plastic protected), publishers' original brown cloth-boards and plain endpapers. The series editors were C Hilary Fry, Stuart Keith and Emil K Urban, and Martin Woodcock was the main illustrator. The text is profusely illustrated with b/w drawings and tables, with 2-colour distribution maps, and with inserted colour plates. There are separate introductions, acknowledgments, bibliographies and indexes for all volumes. From Vol II Claude Chappuis provides accoustic references (lists of recordings of bird sounds).
