Beschreibung:

VERDI, GIUSEPPE Autograph music quotation from the opera Falstaff, Paris, 14 October 1894, with an autograph quotation by Ernest Reyer on the verso signed and inscribed by the composer ("Falstaff...Parigi 14 Oct 1894-G.Verdi"), the opening four bars of the final ensemble 'Tutto nel mondo è burla', notated in black ink on two printed staves, with: ERNEST REYER, autograph musical quotation from the chorus from the opening scene of the opera Érostrate, signed and inscribed ("Erostrate (1r acte)...E.Reyer"), notated in black ink on two printed staves, with the words "Sur nos luths d'Ionie, D'une douce harmonie, modulons les accents", no place or date 2 pages in all, oblong 8vo (c.17 x 26.5cm), on a printed album-leaf with an elaborate gilt border ("H. Lard__Paris"), 14 October 1894, Verdi signed off on his incomparable operatic career with the ensemble finale quoted here. Falstaff was premiered at La Scala Milan on 9 February 1893; composed when he was nearly eighty, it is considered by many to be his most perfect operatic achievement. This is the theme of the opera's fugal finale, which is begun by the eponymous comic hero. Ernest Reyer's two-act opera Érostrate was written for Baden-Baden in 1862; he had taken over running the summer opera season there from Berlioz.
