GABIROL, Solomon ben Judah ibn (1020-1057). Mivchar ha-Peninim (translated from the Arabic by Judah ibn Tibbon, with a commentary attributed to Samson of Joigny [d. before 1328]). MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER [Ottoman Empire], copied for R. Judah Gedaliah, [16th century] 4 o (205 x 165 mm). [1 blank] + 35 leaves, with original Hebrew foliation. Brown ink. Oriental Sephardic semi-cursive script. Slightly smaller script used for the commentary, which appears alongside the main text. (Considerable dampstaining.) Modern blind and gold-tooled red morocco, two modern paper flyleaves at back and front. CONTENTS: With the commentary attributed to Samson of Joigny found in the early editions, perhaps copied from one of the editions. At the end epigrams and other short pieces, some translated from the Arabic, collected by [the scribe?] AS"F. First printed edition: Soncino 1484 (Vinograd, Thesaurus , p. 687, no. 3). PROVENANCE: The commissioner was most probably Judah ben Moses Gedaliah of Salonica (second half of the sixteenth century), author of Masoret Talmud Yerushalmi (Constantinople 1573; Vinograd, Thesaurus , p. 608, no. 242) and other books.
