De Gagny (d. 1549) was Chancellor of the University of Paris and premier aumônier of Francis I, benefactor of Garamond and great admirer of Aldo Manuzio. He commissioned a goldsmith from Tours, Maître Charles Chiffin, to cut his italic type, which closely imitated that of Aldo's. Nicolas LeRiche was his nephew, in whose shop Venetian imprints of the Aldine Press were also sold. 8vo (190 x 121 mm). Italic type, 33 lines plus headline. collation: *8 B-T8 V4: 156 leaves. Engraved anchor device on title- page. (Internal hole to *2 affecting text, dampstaining, marginal worming.) binding: Contemporary limp vellum (195 x 127 mm), spine with faded manuscript title and catalogue number, traces of two pairs of ties, title in a contemporary hand on tail-edge. (Overall worn, spine damaged with loss, lacking ties.)
