Beschreibung:

Gainsborough, Thomas 1727-1788 British, A Cart and Horses Passing by a Cottage. 7.25 x 10 ins., (8.5 x 25.5 cms.), Soft-ground etching, From the Original in the Collection of Dr. Monro, Published March 1st 1803 by J.Laporte and W.F.Wells. Gainsborough enjoyed the technique of soft-ground etching, which permitted him a more 'painterly' approach to print making. Gainsborough did not appreciate the time consuming exercise of traditional etching and probably learned the soft-ground technique from Paul Sandby Sandby wrote, 'It saves all the trouble of etching with a needle and will produce an outline like fine Indian chalk.' It is unlikely that Gainsnborough himself made many copper plates, the process took too much time away from drawing, his passion. Almost all his published prints were actually taken from his drawings and copied onto plates by Boydell, Laporte, Wells and others. These prints offered for sale are very high quality.
