Antwerp: [P Galle?], 1581. 4° (200 x 1423mm). Engraved title, one-page letterpress introduction in Latin, 29 engraved plates by and after P. Galle. Old style limp vellum gilt by Leighton Brewer, covers with central arabesque enclosed by an ornate border with scrolling cornerpieces, gilt spine directly lettered, green edges, green cloth ties. Provenance : A.H. Bright (bookplate). FIRST EDITION. EXQUISITE IMPRESSIONS OF THE PLATES. BRIGHT COPY in all senses. The accompanying Latin verses were composed by the Antwerp humanist Hugo Faviolus (1523-1585). The introduction is written by Philips Galle and dedicated to Carolus de Lathem attending at the court of Mathias of Austria, Viceroy of the Netherlands between 1577 and 1581.
