New York: James Rivington, 1774. Octavo (7 ¼ x 4 ½ inches, 185x115 mm). Disbound. Condition: Minor soiling. Provenance : Thomas Hewitson (contemporary signature on title); ex-library (small inked duplicate stamp on title). first edition of galloway’s infamous loyalist tract, publicly burned by the revolutionaries. Galloway published this Pro-British essay while serving as a Pennsylvania representative to the Continental Congress. Once the war began, he fled to England and was convicted in absentia of high treason. This pamphlet exists in two states; this copy with the errata on verso of the title. “One of the most famous Tory tracts, upholding unlimited parliamentary supremacy. In several colonies copies were officially burned” ( Howes ). Adams, American Independence 164; Evans 14059; Howes G34; Sabin 26422.
