Garrison (1805--1879) one of the earliest American abolitionists to demand the "immediate and complete emancipation" of slaves (See DAB). In his "Sonnet to Liberty", written at the height of the Civil War, he underlines the line, "God never made a tyrant nor a slave," and concludes: "And by a mighty hand th' oppressed He yet shall save."
