Pittsburgh: Zadok Cramer for David M'Keehan, 1807. Octavo (6 ½ x 4 ¼ inches, 165x105 mm). Publisher's calf-backed marbled paper covered boards. Condition: contemporary owner's signature torn from the head of the title, minor staining at the upper gutter, usual foxing and browning, lacks the front free endpaper, rear blank torn, early owner's pencil marginalia; binding worn. Provenance: Thomas H. Stevens (early owner's signature on the rear pastedown). an americana cornerstone. the first edition of the earliest full first-hand narrative of the lewis & clark expedition. Gass' Journal of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, on which he served as Sergeant of the Corps of Discovery, preceded the official account by seven years. Published by subscription in Pittsburgh and printed on cheap paper, it is a difficult book to find in good condition. “The first printing of a journal by a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition” ( Literature of the Lewis and Clark Expedition ). This a tall copy , measuring 6 ½ inches high; the work is usually found trimmed down to approximately 5 ¾ inches.
