English 18th-century red straight-grained morocco, Roxburgh arms gold-tooled on sides within shaped panel, fan palmettes at corners, single gilt ornament in spine compartments with title lettered in second, roll-tooled border on turn-ins, gilt edges (small scuff marks on lower cover). Noctes Atticae consists of short chapters on a variety of subjects such as philosophy, history, law, literature and grammar, and was a great success in Antiquity. Some earlier Latin and Greek works are known only from this work through Gellius' extensive quotations.
