GELLIUS, Aulus (c.123-c.165). Noctes Atticae , in Latin and Greek. Venice: Andreas de Paltasichis, 1477. Super-chancery 2° (293 x 198mm). Collation: A-B 1 0 a 1 0 b-x 8 y-z 6 (A1r blank, A1v-B10r table, B10v blank, a1 blank, a2r text, z6r colophon, z6v blank). 198 leaves. 36 lines. Types: 2:112R, 112Greek a . CONTEMPORARY 6-LINE ILLUMINATED INITIAL on first text leaf, initial in gold with white-vine decoration, coloured in pink, green, red and blue, other major initial spaces left blank, small initials and paragraph marks alternating in red and blue. (Lightly washed, small marginal wormholes neatly filled.) English 18th-century red straight-grained morocco, Roxburgh arms gold-tooled on sides within shaped panel, fan palmettes at corners, single gilt ornament in spine compartments with title lettered in second, roll-tooled border on turn-ins, gilt edges (small scuff marks on lower cover). Provenance : contemporary annotations (lightly washed, occasionally trimmed); John Ker, 3rd Duke of Roxburgh (binding, sale 18 May 1812, lot 6425, £4.0.0); Sir John Harford Thorold, Syston Park (1773-1831, bookplate, sale Sotheby's 12 December 1884, lot 209, £8.5.0); C.S. Ascherson (booklabel, sale 20 December 1901). Fourth edition, and a HANDSOME COPY WITH A DISTINGUISHED PROVENANCE. Noctes Atticae consists of short chapters on a variety of subjects such as philosophy, history, law, literature and grammar, and was a great success in Antiquity. Some earlier Latin and Greek works are known only from this work through Gellius' extensive quotations.
