1p., 5.5 x 8.5", "Hd. Qtrs. Eng[ineers] Bureau, Macon, Ga. April 6, 1865." A rare war dated pass for Lieut. Col. Edmund Ivy through the states of Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi, signed by General M. L. Smith just two weeks before Federal troops under Gen. Wilson occupied Macon. Ivy was Lieutenant Colonel of the 21st (Patton's) Louisiana Infantry, and was captured when New Orleans fell in April 1862. After being exchanged, he served in L. Herbert's Brigade and was again captured at Vicksburg. Gen. Martin Luther Smith served as its colonel until promoted to major general. Smith also served as Chief Engineer of the Army of Northern Virginia from April to July 1864 and held the same position with Hood's Army until 1864 when he became Beauregard's Chief Engineer and constructed the Mobile defenses. Smith survived the surrender only a few months, dying in Savannah on July 29, 1866. A fine war dated document. Includes recent engraving of a portrait of Smith. Condition:Even toning, some tears at top and bottom edges. Central fold, ghosts of text on opposite sides of pass.
