[Genethlialogia, or, the doctrine of nativities: containing the whole art of directions, and annual revolutions... also, tables for calculating the planets places for any time, either past, present, or to come; together with the doctrine of horarie questions... Author: Gadbury, John Place: London Publisher: Date: 1658-[1661] Description: [12, of 18 or 20], 276, [2], 38, [4], p. 41, [2], 42-294 pp. With tables and diagrams within. (Folio) 26x16.5 cm (10¼x6½"), modern half calf & marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, raised bands. Significant astrological work by John Gadbury (1627-1704), much worked with and of especial interest for its contemporary annotations, including a chart of "A child born March the first" on front flyleaf. Gadbury was one of the foremost English astrologers of the 17th century and a prolific writer of almanacs and other astrologically-related texts. Initially a disciple and defender of William Lilly, he eventually turned against Lilly and denounced him as fraudulent in 1675. Lacking title page, frontispiece, and 3 or 4 other leaves at front, as well as the 10 unnumbered leaves at the end, making it difficult to determine whether this copy is from the 1658 first printing or the 1661 re-issue. Lot Amendments Condition: Browning and soiling to contents, neat archival repairs notably to the early leaves, portion of original front endpaper mounted on pastedown, with ownership inscriptions; good to very good, sold with all faults. The minimum shipping and handling per invoice is $20 for shipments to the US and $30 for shipments outside the US please consider this when determining your bid amount Item number: 324618a
