[Geography - Poetry] FERNÁNDEZ de MEDRANO, Sebastián La géographie de Medrano illustrée, et traduitte de l'espagnol en vers françois par Pierre Henri de Vaernewyck. Brussels, J. Léonard, 16mo: pp.; 1 pl. (browning, pin hole and ms. entries on title, sm. marg. waterstain, cut short without loss). 19th-c. three-quarter calf signed J. Schavye "relieur de S.M. le roi Bruxelles", marbled paper on boards, blind-filleted spine with raised bands, gilt beige leather title-label (some scratches). First edition of the translation, published the same year as the original Spanish edition in verse ("Breve descripcion del mundo, o Guia geographica", Brussels, L. Marchant), dedicated by the translator to Francisco Antonio de Agurto, 1st Marquess of Gastañaga, Governor of the Spanish Netherlands (1685-1692). Medrano (1646-was a Spanish mathematician and military engineer, director of the Military Academy of Mathematics and Fortification in Brussels from until his death. Complete with the fold. world map engr. by Richard Collin after Verboom. In fine, a 19th-c. ms. biographical and genealogical note (4 pp.) on P.H. de Vaernewyck, who was also the author of a tragedy, "Le duc de Montmout" (1702). Ref.
