Autograph letter signed "G. A. Custer" to "My dear Mr. McIntosh" apologizing for the delay in replying and sending a letter of recommendation on his behalf.
Fort Lincoln, Dakota Territory: 12 July 1875. 1 p., on a single sheet of ruled paper (245 x 190 mm). Condition : folds and other creases, light offsetting, minor bleeding to signature. “Your letter after unusual delay reached me here. I had been absent in the east some weeks. I enclose a letter to the Adjutant Genl in your favor and I sincerely trust you may realize your fullest expectations in this as well as in all things which tend to your advancement and benefit. Please remember me kindly to Mrs McInstosh & believe me …” Probably written to Lt. Donald McIntosh (descended on his mother’s side from Red Jacket!) an officer in the 7th Cavalry and a favorite of Custer. In 1876, a year after this letter, Custer appointed McIntosh to command Company G. At the Battle of Little Bighorn, McIntosh’s company served in Reno’s brigade. He did not survive the battle and was among those killed in the line of timber.
