Departing from Lucknow in December 1782, Forster travelled north through India to Kashmir, 'and became the first Englishman to enter Srinagar, which had previously been seen by only a handful of Europeans. He entered Srinagar pretending to be a lost native of Turkestan, leaving in a hurry disguised as the ubiquitous Armenian trader' (R. J. Howgego Encyclopaedia of Exploration (p. 393), before proceeding via Kandahar and Herat to the Caspian Sea, and thence to Russia. The first edition of volume I was printed in Calcutta in 1790, but volume II did not appear until 1798, when it was accompanied with a reprinting of the first volume.
