Monroe Wheeler was an early lover and mentor of George Platt Lynes Along with writer Glenway Wescott (1901-1987), the three men formed a complex triangular relationship beginning in 1927 until Lynes' death in 1955. Upon Wheeler's death in 1988, his archive that included materials from the estates of Lynes and Wescott passed into the care of his last partner, the historian and archaeologist Anatole Pohorilenko. Pohorilenko, who passed away in 2014, famously authored When We Were There: The Travel Albums of George Platt Lynes Monroe Wheeler, and Glenway Wescott, 1925-1935 that beautifully explores and recounts the relationship between Wheeler, Lynes, and Wescott. The present work and the previous lot, Untitled: (Monroe Wheeler, Nude) by George Platt Lynes are part of the Monroe Wheeler archives that Pohorilenko inherited were each stored in plain brown envelopes bearing the inscriptions "MW/GPL PRIVATE" on the outside of one and "Intimacies" on the other in Lynes' hand.
