GEORGE SHAW (1751-1813) General Zoology... Mammalia. London: Thomas Davison for G.Kearsley, 1800-1801. 2 volumes, 8 (216 x 132mm). Four engraved additional titles, each printed in sepia, with hand-coloured vignette by Heath after Shaw, 234 engraved plates (233 printed in sepia, one (pl.12) printed in blue), 231 hand-coloured, all by Heath or Shaw. (Pages 231-2 detached and loosely inserted, occasional light browning or spotting.) Contemporary black calf gilt, the flat spines in five compartments, green and red morocco lettering-pieces in two, the others elaborately tooled in gilt, gilt turn-ins (joints neatly repaired). Provenance : George Thomas Leaton of Whickham (armorial bookplate). AN UNRECORDED ISSUE WITH COLOURED PLATES of this part work. George Shaw (assistant keeper, and from 1807 keeper of the natural history section of the British Museum) was responsible for the first eight volumes of the General Zoology published between 1800 and 1812, volumes IX-XIV (on birds) were completed by J.F.Stephens in 1828. The work is recorded by Lowndes as having been published with black and white plates at "36 l 15s. or on large paper, with proof impressions, 53 l 4s." Neither Lowndes, nor any of the standard bibliographies, record an issue with coloured plates, and there appears to be no record of a set or part work, with coloured plates, having been sold at auction.
