GERARD, John (1545-1612). The Herball or Generall Historie of Plantes very much enlarged and amended by Thomas Johnson . London: Adam Islip, Joyce Norton and Richard Whitakers, 1636. 2° (347 x 230mm). Engraved title incorporating a portrait of the author, 2,821 botanical woodcuts in the text, old pressed plant at Aa2. (Flyleaves and title chipped and frayed at edges, occasional light spotting and soiling, with a few short marginal tears.) Contemporary calf (rebacked, extremities rubbed, head- and tailcaps worn, corners bumped, ring mark to upper cover). Provenance : early ink household accounts on waste pastedowns, probably pre-dating publication -- Robert Campibille (17th-century ink ownership inscription to flyleaf) -- Hugh Campbell, third earl of Loudoun (c.1673-1731, engraved armorial bookplate) -- 18th-century price of £3/5s to flyleaf.
