GERARD, JOHN The Herball or Generall Historie of Plantes. London: John Norton 1597 Folio (317 x 212 mm). Engraved engraved title by William Rogers engraved portrait of Gerard, historiated woodcut initials, 2146 woodcuts of plants in the text with contemporary hand-coloring, one instances of contemporary marginalia; periodic dampstaining to upper margin, minor worming, some offsetting a few stray spots. Contemporary brown calf, spine with raised bands in seven compartments, gilt morocco label to second, others with repeat overall filigree motif in gilt; overall wear, corners bumped with loss to calf, joints weak. The first edition of Gerard's Herbal, renowned for including the first illustration of a potato (p.781) A very good copy of the first edition of this famous English herbal. Gerard included about 182 native flowering plants which had not been described in earlier works, and thus made a significant contribution to the advancement of our knowledge of plants the United Kingdom; his interest was, however, chiefly confined to their medicinal and decorative qualities. The work is also important for having the first illustration of the potato (p.781), although most of the woodcuts are printed from blocks used in the Eicones plantarum of Tabernaemontanus published at Frankfurt in 1590.
