GERBERT DE MONTREUIL (early 13th century). Roman de la violette, ou de Gérard de Nevers, en vers. Edited from two manuscripts in the Royal Library by Francisque Michel (1809-87). Paris: A. Pinard for Silvestre, 1834. 8 o (240 x 145 mm). PRINTED ON CHINA PAPER, one of nine copies, with an EXTRA SET OF VELLUM IMPRESSION of the 9 plates, including 8 reproducing miniatures ILLUMINATED IN GOLD AND COLORS. The 9 plates also on China (one illuminated). (Slight foxing to leaf-edges.) BOUND BY CHARLES-FRANçOIS-CAPé FOR LéON RATTIER, 3rd quarter of the 19th century: gold-tooled red morocco, large central pointillé cartouche containing a purple violet on both sides, compartments of spine finely tooled and lettered, citron morocco doublures diapered with fillets and foliage with Rattier's initials repeated in each compartment, gilt edges. Slipcase. Provenance : Léon Rattier (binding, bookplate). FIRST EDITION of this important medieval verse romance from Picardie. The reproductions of miniatures in a 15th-century prose manuscript from the La Vallière collection are executed lithographically by Jouy of the firm Martenot, Jouy and de La Motte, the illumination was done by hand at the publisher's; the frontispiece-minature and initial were facsimiled by Théophile Fragonard "l'un de nos artistes distingués". The Rattier copy is NO. 5 OF 9 COPIES ON PAPIER DE CHINE WITH THE REPRODUCTIONS ILLUMINATED ON VELLUM. The finisher for Capé's very fine binding, commissioned by Rattier, was the elder Marius Michel the leading doreur for the busiest Parisian shops of the Second Empire.
