A REMARKABLE COLLECTION DOCUMENTING SOME KEY MOMENTS IN THE HISTORY OF GERMAN MUSIC PUBLISHING.
This collection unites three of the greatest names in nineteenth-century German music publishing - those of the Berlin firm of Schlesinger, the Vienna company of Haslinger, and of Robert Lienau (1838-1920), who, having joined the publishing business of Schlesinger in Berlin in 1864, acquired those two publishing houses in 1864 and 1875, respectively.
Annotations and signatures of the various parties on some of the catalogues make it clear that these formed the basis of the actual negotiations and contracts for the various sales. A coda to the collection is provided by the list of publications which were transferred in 1938 to the Verlag Carl Haslinger, sections of whose Vienna operations were directed as an independent firm by Robert Lienau's younger son Friedrich Wilhelm Lienau (1876-1973) after his withdrawal from the Berlin business in 1938.
