Monogrammist HR (geboren S) (19th Century) Still Life with Fruit, Flowers and Finch Signed lower left Oil on panel, 44.8 x 31.8 cm Provenance: Private collection, the Netherlands Note: This captivating still life is the creation of an as-yet-unidentified 'brush princess' (penseelprinses), blessed with exceptional talent. The term 'brush princess' refers to privileged women who excelled in painting purely as a hobby, without the intention of earning money. In the 19th century, women faced formidable obstacles in gaining access to formal art education and were unfortunately often marginalized in the art world. This widespread lack of recognition and limited opportunities led to a situation where women artists didn't sign their artworks in the same way male artists did. In this artwork, there's a distinctive signature "H.R. Geb. S", likely referencing her maiden name before marriage. It's noteworthy that there were exceptions among women who came from artistic families, such as Adriana Haanen, Margaretha Roosenboom, and Gerardina Jacoba van de Sande Bakhuyzen who did have the rare opportunity to join the Art Academy or an artist's studio and exhibit their work. In contemporary times, there is a conscious effort towards inclusivity within art institutions. Specialized exhibitions now showcase the works of female artists, emphasizing a heightened focus on rediscovering and appreciating the contributions of historical women painters. * Condition report available upon request
