Beschreibung:

Lot of 2, including map and reprint of a Sketch of the Battles of Gettysburg. 16 x 19.5 in. chromolithographed map, originally issued with pamphlet, now detached, with legend in lower right FIELD of GETTYSBURG. July 1st, 2nd, & 3rd. Prepared by T. Ditterline. Accompanied by a modern reprint of the original pamphlet: Ditterline, T. (1863) Sketch of the Battles of Gettysburg, July 1st, 2d, and 3d, 1863: With An Account of the Movements of the Respective Armies for Some Days Previous Thereto. Compiled from the Personal Observation of Eye-Witnesses of the Several Battles. [Accompanied by an EXPLORATORY MAP.] C.A. Alvord, Electrotyper and Printer. New York. The map itself shows the Gettysburg and environs in a scaled oval, with green shaded areas denoting woods and troop placement in blue (Union) and red (Confederate), along with the town and all principal roads. An incredibly scarce map, printed in the same year as the battle, and almost certainly the FIRST published map of the historic confrontation which most scholars believe was the beginning of the end of the Confederacy. Little is known of Ditterline, though on the last page of the pamphlet he does indicate his indebtedness to the several correspondents of the press who were present and witnessed the battles, and from whose descriptions of the fight he has freely extracted; as also to the citizens of the town, and particularly D. McCenaughy, Esg., who has kindly furnished him with much valuable information. Not in Broadfoot. Condition: Map heavily toned; some print missing from the "Remarks" in the lower left corner (insect damage). A few nonprofessional repairs and loss where map was removed from its original pamphlet many years ago. Central oval fine. Still a scarce imprint and worthy of restoration.
