Gilbert Stuart Newton (British/American, 1794-1835) The Artist as He Appeared at a Fancy Ball. Inscribed "Original study by Gilbert Stuart ..The painter himself as he appeared at a fancy Ball was rapidly sketched to describe his...to a friend. Henry Inman presented this to Mr. McMurtin, who presented it to Mr. Levis (?) stein, who on the 5th of Sept. 1851 presented it to John Neagle This study was bought by Thomas Fitzgerald at the sale of John Neagle's pictures at the Academy of the Fine Arts March 31, 1866" on the reverse. Oil on board, 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 in. (13.9 x 8.8 cm), framed. Condition: Curve to support, surface grime and varnish inconsistencies, retouch. N.B. Born in Halifax, Newton was the nephew of painter Gilbert Stuart and studied with his uncle while living in Massachusetts between 1803 and 1817. He was more successful, however, in London, and spent most of his career there. Exhibitions: Twenty-ninth Annual Exhibition, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 1852, number 82, listed as the property of John Neagle
