GILL, Eric. [1883 - 1940. Illustrator]. The Four Gospels of Lord Jesus Christ. The Golden Cockerel Press, 1931. single volume, first edition, Limited Edition, No. 133 of 500 copies, folio, (344 x 245mm), finely bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in half white pigskin buckram, raised bands, gilt lettering to spine, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, bookplate of Christian Heuer to front pastedown, 65 wood-engraved sub-titles, pictorial headlines and initials by Eric Gill Printed by Robert and Moira Gibbings, 269pp. The Four Gospels is generally regarded as the masterpiece of The Golden Cockrell Press, announced in the Spring of 1928, it was a further two years before work started, the printing of the book being a complex process, as Gill designed the opening word and design for each chapter after the compositors had set the type. Gill completed all the wood-engravings within ten months. The Four Gospels received unanimous praise and has never lost its critical acclaim.
