The condottiero F. d'Ávalos (1489-1525), marquese of Pescara, was an important military figure in the Great Wars of Italy. He was taken prisoner by the French during the Battle of Ravenna in but released after the War of the League of Cambrai. He was later Chief Commander of the armies of Charles V and defeated the French at Bicocca and Pavia. He was married to Vittoria Colonna, one of the most famous Italian female poets of 16th century.
