GOEDAERT, Joannes (1617-1668)
Metamorphosis et historia naturalis inscectorum. Middelburg: Jacques Fierens, [1662-67-69].
First edition of fine set complete with third volume, published posthumously. Like many 'virtuosi' of the 17th century, Joannes Goedaert, who never attended university, began his investigations of the natural realm from the standpoint of an artist and craftsman. His sole work, Metamorphosis naturalis, was the earliest study of insect populations in the Netherlands. By capturing 'larvae' and raising them to maturity, and by calling on his existing expertise as a painter, Goedaert was able to observe and record the transformations of beetles, flies, wasps, butterflies and moths. Nissen ZBI 1603.
3 volumes, octavo (177 x 92mm). Engraved frontispiece in vols. I and II, vol. II with engraved portrait of author, and 123 (of 126) engraved plates (3 folding), all coloured by a contemporary hand (without heraldic vignette, vol. I lacking 3 plates, vol. III without engraved frontispiece, very light spotting, plates 46 and 47 with marginal tear and chip). Contemporary vellum, spine titled (extremities with occasional marks).
