GOLD RUSH -- IDAHO]. -- LOWELL, Daniel W. (fl. mid-19th Century). Map of the Nez Perces and Salmon River Gold Mines In Washington Territory. Compiled from the Most Recent Surveys . San Francisco: Whitton, Waters & Co, 1862.
GOLD RUSH -- IDAHO]. -- LOWELL, Daniel W. (fl. mid-19th Century). Map of the Nez Perces and Salmon River Gold Mines In Washington Territory. Compiled from the Most Recent Surveys . San Francisco: Whitton, Waters & Co, 1862. 12 o (143 x 102 mm). 21 pages text, 3-page advertisement at end. Large folding lithographed map by Britton, sheet: 414 x 655 mm (a few splits along folds, several repaired on verso, small marginal loss at right). Original blind-blocked flexible cloth, gilt-lettered on front cover; quarter black morocco slipcase. Provenance : Thomas W. Streeter (bookplate; his sale part V, Parke-Bernet, 23 October 1968, lot 3299). FIRST EDITION. "A superior map, with no appearance of having been hastily drafted... This is the earliest and probably the best map marking routes to the Washington [Idaho] gold mines. The area covered is from 44 degrees to almost 49 degrees north, and from the 112th meridian to the Pacific Ocean. Its primary importance lies in its eastern portion, where the gold regions are highlighted in yellow and important towns such as Lewiston, Pierce City, Oro Fino City, and others are indicated. Wagon roads and pack trails are delineated, and principal points such as Lawyers' Crossing, Bells Ferry and Burns are noted. One supposes that a miner might have gone about his search for the yellow metal in all confidence, armed with this map" (Wheat). The 24-page pamphlet that accompanies the map states that the map had been corrected by Alonzo Leland and others who had mined and prospected during the past season in the regions described. The work is a narrative of the conditions at the new diggings, written from personal experience, being one of the first records of Idaho's history as a settled region. The text also contains the code of 16 laws adopted at a meeting of the miners at Summit Hill, and the mining laws of the Oro Fino district. RARE: according to American Book Prices Current only two copies have sold at auction in at least thirty years, and none since 1985. Graff 2551; Greenwood, California Imprints 1666; Howes L-527; Streeter sale V:3299 (this copy); Wagner-Camp-Becker 383; Wheat, Mapping the Trans-Mississippi West 1047.
