Florilegium Harlemense … Colored plates with descriptions of bulbous and tuberous rooted plants published under the auspices of the council of the "Allgemeene Vereeniging voor Bloembollencuktuur".
Haarlem, Holland: de Erven Loosjes, [1896-]1901[-1902]. Large quarto (350 x 270 mm). Title and text in Dutch, English, French and German. 60 chromolithographic plates by J.L. Goffart after Goossens. Original light brown half morocco over brown textured cloth-covered boards, titled in gilt on the upper cover, spine in six compartemnts with raised bands, lettered in the second, the others with repeat decoration in gilt, marbled endpapers. Condition : appreciable spotting to about 20 plates, plate 32 with a 15mm. clean tear to the lower blank margin; light scuffing to extremities, small splits to upper joint. Provenance : Lynn Abbott Trust. a fine copy of the first edition of this beautiful and valuable record of the best that the bulb growers of haarlem had to offer at the turn of the 19th century . The excellent chromolithographs by Goffart are after originals by the Belgian botanical artist Alfred Goossens. Amongst the 60 plates are 20 of Hyacinths, 20 of Tulips, 5 of Daffodils, Narcissi, Jonquils, etc, 2 of Lilies and 4 of Irises. the genesis of this work is described in the preface. "When the the well known Album van Eeden … was completed in 1881, there arose a continual demand among bulb-growers and exporters for the continuation … It was not until the year 1894 that these wishes could be realized … and it was decided to make an agreement … for the publication of a standard work devoted to the bulbs of the Haarlem export trade".
