GOSS, William Henry (1833-1906), a partial collection of correspondence and printed ephemera formed by Goss, including a signed autograph fragment by General Charles George Gordon (1833-85) reading "Believe me my dear Augusta your affectionate brother, C.G. Gordon", with superscription of Goss, framed and glazed, and among other related items a Raphael Tuck card, "The Last Slumber: Gordon in Khartoum"; a cabinet photograph of Gordon's friend, Li Hung Chang, by C. Camus, Paris; and a small printed card with chromolithographic border, "Copy of the Verse that General Gordon hung over his bedroom mantelpiece", printed by the Gordon Boys Orphanage, Dover (3 copies), also a charming 1898 Christmas card from Mrs. W.H. Anderson, Gordon's sister. Goss, a Staffordshire potter, learnt his trade from William Copeland, working in Parian ware and terra cotta. He began his own business in 1858, had his own factory in Stoke-on-Trent by 1870 which became the famous Falcon Works, and after the General's death in Khartoum clearly became an enthusiastic collector of Gordon ephemera, cultivating friendly relations with Mrs. Anderson.
