GOULD, JOHN. A Monograph of the Odontophorinae, or Partidges of America. London: published by the author [1844-] 1850. Large folio, 547 x 371 mm. (21 9/16 x 14 5/8 in.) green half morocco, joints, extremities and raised bands rubbed with some leather loss, library stamps on title, some darkening to fore-edges, plates 24 and 25 slightly darkened . FIRST EDITION, subscribers list, 32 hand-colored lithographed plates by Gould and H.C. Richter, printed by Hullmandel & Walton. Gould's fourth monograph, originally published in three parts issued in 1844, 1846 and 1850, is dedicated to his fellow ornithologist Prince Charles Lucien Bonaparte, and is the only work by Gould exclusively devoted to the Americas, although he had yet to visit that continent when he wrote it. (His first and last visit theres took place in 1857). The work more than tripled the recorded species of the American partridge family: "In the course of my researches I have several times visited most of the public and many of the private collections of Europe, and have besides corresponded to various persons in America: the result is that I have had the pleasure of extending our knowledge of the group from eleven to no less than thirty-five species" (Preface). Ayer/Zimmer p. 257; Copenhagen/Anker 176; Fine Bird Books p. 78; McGill/Wood p. 365; Nissen IVB 376; Sauer 13. [ With :] AN ORIGINAL CRAYON, GOUACHE AND WATERCOLOR DRAWING of an Ocellated Partridge (Cyrtonix Ocellatus), a Massena Partridge (Cyrtonyx Massena), and a third very similar species, on a sheet of plain off-white drawing paper, 298 x 404mm. (11 3/4 x 15 7/8 in.), three short marginal tears, edges a bit worn, somewhat soiled . The drawing, which is unsigned and bears trial brush strokes in the upper right corner and faint pencil sketches in the blank portions, is fairly rough sketch, probably by John Gould before the finish work by Richter. The three partridges are shown standing in grass, their names written in crayon next to them. The bird on the left is inscribed "Cyr. Sallées"[?]. A later owner has annotated it in pencil at bottom. Provenance : Charles Barney Cory (1857-1921), author of Birds of the Americas (1918-19) and curator of Field Museum, Chicago, gift of the above, shelf-mark number on title-page Dr. Evan Morton Evans (1870-1955) Daniel Webster Evans (1907-1966).
