Paley has won a Guggenheim Fellowship for Fiction (1961), the Edith Wharton Award (1983), and the Rea Award for the Short Story (1993). Gordon Lish, who as fiction editor of Esquire from 1969 to 1977, championed the short stories of Raymond Carver and Richard Ford has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, The O. Henry Prize, and the 2005 Antioch Review Awards for Distinguished Prose.
