Belknap (1829-1890), Grant's Secretary of War; matted and framed with a portrait of Grant, old folds, a few small holes along central vertical fold, 18 x 14 1/2 in. Wells rose to the rank of Brigadier-General, serving in the Civil War, and made the long march from Fort Davis, Texas, to Fort Meade, South Dakota; he fought in the Sioux Indian campaign in South Dakota in the 1890s, served in Cuba, and later in the Far East during the Boxer Rebellion.
