GRANT ATTEMPTS TO OUTFLANK LEE AT THE NORTH ANNA Grant, having failed to defeat Lee in several weeks bloody battles in the Wilderness, and at Spotsylvania, in a tersely worded despatch, gives clear instructions for yet another attempt to outflank Lee on the Union left: "If Gen. Warren's movement is successful your Corps and Wrights will move to night the latter following Hancock and you following Warren on the telegraph road. The action of the enemy may change or modify this. You want to keep as close to the enemy as possible and report any movement of his you may observe. At 10 a.m. my Hd Qts will be removed to Metaponax Church." Abandoning his attempts on Lee's strong lines at Spotsylvania (7-20 May), but determined to keep up the pressure on Lee's army, Grant decided to shift his operation to the south-east, towards the North Anna River. But Lee, anticipating the movement, was able to entrench across Grant's path, and the flanking manoeuver failed. The enemy position being too strong, Grant withdrew on 26-27 May to Hanover Town to formulate another approach.
