GRANT, ULYSSES S., President . Autograph endorsement signed ("U.S. Grant") as President, to Secretary of War James D. Cameron [Washington, D.C.], 5 August 1876. 11 lines plus dateline and signature, written on the verso of a letter from Frederick Ringgold, Office of the Chief of Engineers stationery, a few separations at folds . President Grant attempts to aid the brother of an officer killed in the Mexican-American War: "Referred to the Sec[retary] of War. The writer [Frederick Ringgold] is the brother of Maj[or] [Samuel] Ringgold, killed early in the Mexican War, and the friend of the Light Artillery system of the Army. I hope the old gentleman may be continued..." As Southern Reconstruction reached its final stages, the reduction of the United States Army was a necessary step towards a peace-time economy.
