GRANT, ULYSSES S., President . Autograph letter signed ("Ulysses") TO HIS FATHER, Jesse Root Grant, St. Louis, Missouri, 31 January 1864. 1 full page, 4to, small fold separations repaired without loss. GENERAL GRANT: I "DO NOT WANT TO LEAVE 'DIXIE' AGAIN UNTIL THE WAR IS OVER" During a lull in the fighting, before he was promoted to Lt. General and placed in command of the Army of the Potomac, Grant writes to his father, Jesse Root Grant (1794-1873): "Dear Father, Your letter of the 26th is received. Before this you must have seen from the papers that I have accepted invitations to dinners hence know that Fred [Grant's eldest son] is out of danger. He has been very ill and will not be strong enough to send to school before next fall. I leave here for Nashville tomorrow. Cannot go home at present, in fact do not want to leave 'Dixie' again until the War is over. The attention I receive, whilst it is flattering, is to me very embarassing. I am in most excellent health, Fred. is improving finely and the balance of the family are well."
