Found among the papers of General Thomas H. Ruger, who served as commanding officer at Fort Assiniboine, MT and later as commander of the Montana District of the U.S. Army. Stuart (1834-1918) one of the pioneers who moved to Montana Territory with discovery of gold and silver in the 1860s, he became an influential rancher, vigilante, politician and spent his final years as librarian at the Butte Public Library.
