The Salvation Army was established in London in 1865 by William Booth an evangelical minister determined to establish a Christian mission with the efficiency of an army. The Salvation Army spread to the United States in 1880, attacking poverty and homelessness in the most bereft neighborhoods. By the early 20th century, the Army was an established philanthropic force in America, and during the Great Depression led the way in feeding and sheltering the thousands of men and women rendered homeless by the recent economic disasters. This lot features a collection of letters, documents, memos, and printed materials from the New York city headquarters of the Salvation Army, 1931-1933. Present are yearly census reports on the number of transients, rare publications on Salvation Army procedures and the various welfare services of New York, inventories of supplies at various shelters, interdepartmental memos regarding training junior officers, a report suggesting improvements to the food and shelter programs, and more.
