GREENAWAY, KATE. Album containing seven original drawings, two autograph letters signed, and a collection of greeting cards, 4to, blue morocco gilt, g.e., spine faded, joints rubbed, upper inner hinge split, slipcase; each item matted within ink-ruled border . CONTENTS: Letters : Autograph letter signed ("Katie") to "Joanie," Frognal, Hampstead, 17 September 1887, 4 pp., 8vo, on blue paper , expressing sympathy for an invalid relative; Autograph letter signed with her initials, to Lily Evans (daughter of Greenaway's publisher Edmund Evans , Frognal, 9 October 1899, 4 pp.. 8vo, on Frognal letterhead stationery, minor showthrough , expressing her condolences for an unnamed misfortune: "Fate isn't kind to you-- but surely you rather tempt her," and describing a recent Fine Arts Society exhibit in London: "there were a few people who would have amused you -- aesthetic beings -- but I part[icular]ly admired their dresses...there are lots of pretty things there... the furniture isn't as good as usual -- but the clavichord ornamented by Burne-Jones--lovely...." Drawings : Gouache and watercolor drawing of a little girl holding a book and purse, within rule border, 88 x 61 mm. , signed KG, a finished preparatory drawing for a greeting card; six pencil sketches, sizes ranging from 184 x 145 mm. to 75 x 110 mm. , the first, of a mother and small child, signed "KG, April 1883," the remainder unsigned, as follows: a girl and a boy promenading hand in hand; a girl with doll, captioned "Polly the Queen of the Pirate tale"; a dog on its hand legs, captioned "The Pussie Pie" (both captions in Greenaway's hand); a rough sketch of dwarves, elves and cherubin under a toadstool; a girl's face. Greeting cards : Kate Greenaway's Carols, London [1883], 3 (of 4) color-printed wood-engraved cards, 231 x 184 mm. ; 2 copies of a smaller color wood-engraved card on thick paper of children playing (Schuster & Engen 266, card 1); 4 copies of a white on black embossed Christmas card, in 2 variant colors (Schuster & Engen 272, card 4), and 12 miscellaneous color-printed greeting cards after Greenaway. [ With ] Letter-portfolio, 227 x 151 mm. (9 x 6 1/8 in.), nineteenth-century maroon morocco, upper cover lettered in gilt: "From Kate Greenaway to Polly and Kitty 1898," accordeon letter compartment inside front cover; folding morocco-backed cloth case (worn) . Laid down on inside lower cover are 7 small pen-and-ink sketches (one partly in pencil), 3 signed "KG," 82 x 77 mm. and smaller , including 2 very small oval drawings, most of childish figures, one of a house; and, loosely inserted in pocket, two pencil sketches of female profiles, one on card, 130 x 155 mm., the other on gray paper, 172 x 114 mm.) , the first inscribed "Dorothy from KG, 1895."
