GREUTER, Matthäus (1556?-1638). Mantua . Rome: 1629. Engraved bird's-eye plan of Mantua on a single median sheet 405 x 540mm (engraving 286 x 415mm). The map showing the town on its island surrounded by its lake decorated with small fishing boats, with San Gregorio, the title set in a strapwork cartouche. A VERY FINE AND RARE PLAN OF MANTUA. Matthäus Greuter the famous Strasburg cartographer, astronomer, globemaker, typecutter, and engraver, was active in Rome until his death. Greuter moved to Rome in 1600, after a period in both Lyon and Avignon. In 1618 he produced a plan of Rome and before 1620 a map of Italy. Nevertheless, separately issued maps by Greuter are very rare, and this is a particularly late example. From 1630 onwards he concentrated his efforts on making globes, publishing one pair in 1632, and another pair in 1636. His maps and globes were very successful, the latter being republished by Giovanni Battista de Rossi, and again by his heirs in 1695. Greuter was very aware of the developments in cartography and geography being made in Northern Europe, and his globes were inspired by the work of Willem Jansz. Blaeu (1571-1638), Pieter van den Keere (1571-1646) and Pieter Plancius (1552-1622). Watermark Woodward 332.
