GRONOVIUS, JOHAN FREDERIK. Flora Virginica Exhibens Plantas quas V.c. Johannes clayton in Virgina Observavit atque collegit. Leiden, 1739-43. 2 parts in one vol., 8vo, 226 x 130 mm., 19th century half morocco, uncut, light rubbing to joints and corners; light browning and staining, second part shorter (220 x 130 mm.) and title reinforced along inner margin. FIRST EDITION, first issue of the first Virginian flora per se. PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Gronovius on title: "ex dono authoris J. Fred. Gronovius." Based on collections made by John Clayton at the beginning of the 18th century. Although prior to Species plantarum 1753, Stearn regards this as the most important edition of the work "because Linnaeus helped in its production, and because many species in the Species plantarum are based upon it." (Hunt). Stafleu & Cowan TL2 2189. Provenance : Several old ownership inscriptions on title, and old annotations in text -- Edward Sandford Burgess -- Kenneth K. Mackenzie, Horticultural Society of N.Y., bookplates.
