Literature "Gustave Van de Woestyne" Paul Haesaerts, in 'Apollo', September 1941, p. 3 Documentation MODEL FOR THE VENUS DE MILO "In the spring of 1923, Gustave Van de Woestyne travels to Paris. During his visit to the Louvre, he becomes fascinated by the Greek marble statue "The Venus de Milo" (about 130 BC). A period of strongly built figures and expressive facial features, like the Hellenistic models, begins for him. The artist pictorially translates the rendering of the sculpture. He completes the body by adding arms that hide most of her breasts. Thanks to this posture, the lower abdomen line emphasizes sensuality. Van de Woestyne interprets her in a space. The left leg resting on a pedestal, she poses with loose hair. The sculpted head in half profile averts the gaze. She's a shy young women with melancholic expression. While the painter opts for classicism, his model intensifies inner life." Huguette Van de Woestyne-Vanagt
