Contemporary German vellum gilt and painted in green, orange, yellow, and purple, sides with Crucifixion in gilt on green ground within octagonal cartouche, flanked by winged head, floral and foliate spray in vase below, the same spray above, flat spine with tulips, pomegranates and stars in compartments formed by painted orange bands, edges gilt and gauffered, two vellum clasps with chased metal catches (somewhat rubbed, title on spine partly painted over). A handsome example of the exuberance of German painted vellum bindings of the 18th century.
