HAMILTON, Alexander, Politician . Letter signed ("A Hamilton") as Major General and Inspector General of the Army, to Samuel Hodgdon, New York, 12 May 1800. 1 page, 4to, integral autograph address panel, with Hamilton free frank, post mark "New York May 13," seal tear, trace of mounting on verso, otherwise fine. MAJOR-GENERAL HAMILTON AND THE QUASI-WAR. In light of the crisis of a possible war with France, Hamilton writes to the Superintendent of military stores in Philadelphia: "I wrote to you, some time since, requesting a supply of Marquees and tents, for myself and the Adjutent General, with our suites. It is my intention to set out for the camp at Scotch Plains, on Monday next, & I could wish that the tents and Marquees might be there, or at Elizabeth town [New Jersey], by that time. They will be addressed in either case to the Dep. Quarter Master General." After retiring from the Treasury Department in 1795 Hamilton resumed his law practice, but when the war with France loomed in 1798 was commissioned Major General with the post of Inspector General. Hostilities were averted, though, and one month after this letter--on 15 June 1798--Hamilton renounced his commission.
