Harbin was born in South Africa and came to London in 1920, where he began performing magic tricks and appearing in variety shows on stage, and later in television and film. He invented a number of classic illusions, most notably the "Zigzag girl." Berglas escaped from Nazi Germany and emigrated to Britain at the age of 11, and became interested in magic after the end of the war. His most famous innovation was a trick dubbed "the Berglas Effect," in which he is able to produce any card from any position in the deck randomly selected by a volunteer. He founded a non-profit organization in 1999 that presents the annual David Berglas International Magic Award.
