Hardy" (the recipient was the daughter of Henry Tindal Atkinson, a sergeant-at-law or judge who lived near Hardy in Wimborne, where the two became close friends, Miss Tindal Atkinson often performing music for the Hardys); tipped in is an Autograph Letter Signed from Hardy to the father, Max Gate, 21 August 1885, 2 pages, 12mo, light offset from clipping on first page : "We guessed the cane was yours -- it looked so dignified -- and it was no trouble to send across the fields with it to the station. I am living en garçon today -- the household having gone to the seaside for a breeze. We shall be glad when you and yours appear here to see us"; Far from the Madding Crowd, [1895], 8vo, green half calf, gilt spine, t.e.g., others uncut, spine faded, some rubbing at extremities , a volume in Osgood, McIlvaine's edition of the Wessex Novels, with a new Preface by Hardy, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR on front flyleaf: "To Dorothy: with the author's affectionate regard.
