Wilkinson, pencil, pen and black ink and brown wash heightened with white, showing a tree with naval battles and captains written across the trunk and branches, from King Alfred at the base, the [glorious] First of June, Bridport, Camperdown, Battles of the Nile and Trafalgar ascending the trunk, plus later battles, ships and captains detailed on the various branches up until 1850s, a three-masted gun ship at sea to lower right and buildings and trees to lower left, calligrapher and artist identified lower left and right, centrally Harvey's crest and caligraphic dedication 'To Admiral Edward Harvey. This Tree of Battles and Naval Victors is respectfully dedicated by Henry James [signed]', 66 x 51cm (26 x 20ins), framed and glazed. Sir Edward Harvey was a first-class volunteer onboard the Brunswick during the battle of the Glorious First of June 1794. His father Captain John Harvey who was commanding died during the battle. He was also at the battle of Camperdown and served mostly in the North Sea and the Mediterranean. He continued to serve in the Navy, with duties on the Cape of Good Hope and East India stations, in the West Indies, and was involved in operations on the coast of Syria, including the bombardment of Acre in 1840. He was promoted Admiral on 9 June 1860 and made a KCB on 28 June 1861. He died at his residence at Walmer, Kent, on 4 May 1865. Henry James from whom this design is dedicated, is possibly Major General Sir Henry James (1803-1877), Director-General of the Ordnance Survey. The artist is Edward Wolfe Brooker RN (1828-1870). (1)
