In EC horror stories, the domestic apparatus of postwar prosperity often doubled as instruments of doom. EC's gloomy view of the corrosive effects of postwar prosperity was a dime store echo of the critiques of literary discontents such as Henry Miller whose 1945 indictment of midcentury American life, The Air-Conditioned Nightmare, has a certain philosophical overlap with EC's themes.
